Birth Entry at St. Mary Parish's Church

Johann Schmitt and Anna Mary Dumerauf, first child was born in Buffalo Grove, Lake Co., IL. How did I know because their son  Joseph's death certificate mentions he was born there. Now, I just need to prove that. By finding out which church that Johann and Anna belong to. I believe they are Catholic.

I went to the catalog at familysearch.org and I found records from St. Mary Parish. The records are not index, they have to be hand search. I found the record written in German. Even though I can not read German, there was enough there for me to pick it out saying that is the person that I am looking for. I happen to have a few family members that was able to translate this for me.

Joseph Schmitt's Baptism Record - St. Mary Parish, Buffalo Grove, Lake County, IL

"Baptizatus est Joseph nat die 17 August 1866 fllg. Johann Schmitt ex Bavaria et Anna Dumerdauf ex Bavaria Patrini fuere Joseph Dumerdauf X Anne Eva Wardner" P Corbinian Marie ? S ?

"Baptism of Joseph, born 17th of August 1866, son of Johann Schmitt of Bavaria and Anna Dumerdauf of Bavaria, the Godparents were Joseph Dumerdauf  and Anne Eva Wardner"

I am not positive about the abbreviation "fllg", this was the best-guess according to context.

This is the translation that was made for me, as I look at it again. I don't believe that Anne Eva's last name is Warnder. I think it is Weidner. But look at the other godparent Joseph Dumerdauf, that is a brother to Anna Dumeruaf. Now let's don't forget the priest name. Which is hard for me to translate. I have try to made a temp. While searching for some information on the Priest at Buffalo Grove, Lake Co., IL I cam across this article

St. Mary Parish
Buffalo Grove, Lake Co., Illinois

St. Mary Church is in Buffalo Grove. In 1847 monthly masses were begun by a priest from St. Joseph in New Trier (Wilmette). In 1852 the parishioners decided to build a church of their own. In that year they also became a mission of St. John the Baptist in Johnsburg. The first mass in the new building was in 1852. Before it could be dedicated, the church was robbed. The church was dedicated on 26 July 1853. On that day there were also confirmations performed in the church. A few months later the church was vandalized, and it was burned down on 19 February 1855. It is believed that anti-Catholic sentiments were present in the area. Masses were said in a log school house until the church was rebuilt in 1856.

In 1869 St. Mary got a resident pastor. A new building was constructed in 1898. In 1912 a school was built. It was replaced by another building in 1947. As the area became more populated, St. Mary lost territory and the following parishes were formed: St. Alphonsus Liguori in Prospect Heights, St. Joseph the Worker in Wheeling, and St. Edna in Arlington Heights.
Additions to the school were built in 1961 and 1966. St. Mary Cemetery in Buffalo Grove is associated with the church. An addition to the church was built in 1979.

The earliest parishioners were German farming families. The parishioners were still mostly German in the 1940s. A 1947 jubilee history made special mention of the Raupp and Weidner families, even showing genealogies of these families.

The Chicago Archdiocese has allowed the Family History Library to film some sacramental records for St. Mary Church. Microfilms of these records can be rented for a small fee at any local Family History Center. Information on the film (FHL # 1548218) which covers St. Mary Church can be found here. The film covers 1853-1915. *Note that you will need to check items 22-25 on that film in order to be looking at those for St. Mary Church. A church history is also available through the FHL. It includes the Weidner and Raupp genealogies. Be sure to check item 3.

By searching the history on the Buffalo Grove Church I came across this article. The hypro links no active. But what caught my interest is where it said there is a history of the Weidner family. This site was updated on November of 2003. My next step is to check familysearch.org

I did find the St. Mary Parish's church records at Familysearch.org.

Let's recap on what has been found the godparent, Joseph Dumerdauf, is a brother to Ann Mary Dumerdauf. While looking for information on Joseph I found a brother Andrew Dumruff and other various spellings.

1880 census of Saline, Salina Co., KS. Dumruff, Joseph age 45 Works in Elevator, Bavaria (3) Dumruff, Jane age 30 Keeping House, Ireland (3) Dumruff, Kate age 4, Daughter, Kansas, Bavaria, Ireland

I found Andrew Dumerauf selling his land in Lewis Co., Washington on the 27th of June, 1911 BK 117, page 195,Pt N2 of SW9 Sec, Twp 12, R 4W. This is something to check out. Lets see if there is a record available. I did get this check out, and it was not the Andrew Dumerauf who is married to Heneretta Schalk. I believe it to be his son listed below Andrew Dumerauf sold land June 27, 1911 Lewis Co., Washington
Loreader Dumeroff bought land in 11 June 1913, Lewis Co., Washington nothing mention about Andrew. Andrew Dumerauf bought land 15 May 1911 in Lewis Co., Washington Andrew, Dumerauf bought land 28 May 1911 in Lewis Co., Washington

Joseph Dumrof age 72 died in Lewis Co., Washington death 28 May 1910
This rise another question why is Joseph living with his brother, Andrew? Joseph's wife is not listed in the 1889 state census. But there is a H. Dumrouf Male age 45, could this be a mistake and it should be a female, The age match with the 1892 census. I would say with this time frame, that maybe Jane or Jennie Dumrouf had passed away between 1880 and 1889 or divorce her husband.

1892 Chelhalis, Lewis Co., Washington, Heronx, M. age 48 M Canada
Heronx, Kittie age 29 F Wife, Washington
Heronux, Maud age 10 F Washington
Heronx, Emily age 8 F, Washington Heronx, Lottie age 6 F, Washington
Duruff, Kate age 13, F, Kansas Image 25 - https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3QSQ-G9JQ-1KDT?i=24&cc=1910364&cat=2290839 - V. 9 1892 - 100396222
Here I found a Kate Duruff age 13 born in Kansas in the 1889 census, her birth date is a little off. It should be about age 15 for Kate. This explains why Kate was not living with her father, she was probably a maid for the Hernox family. And Kate's mother must of died between 1880-1892. If this is our Kate in the 1889 census then it would narrow it down between 1889-1892 that her mother Jane / Jennie had passed away, and lets not forget that she could of Divorce Joe / Joseph

Anne Eva Weidner had not research on her yet. Not for sure if this is a married name or maiden. It would be nice to find the history on the Weidners that lived in Buffalo Grove.

The good news in doing this research on the Dumerauf's I ran across John and Ann Mary Dumerauf's marriage date from the same church.
